We check out discoDSP's flagship synth, Discovery Pro: a powerful synth that has a good balance of ease-of-use and features.

Pulltube 0 10 11. The music software company discoDSP has been around for many years, and during that time they have developed a long line of exceptional synth plugins and soundware. Some of those plugins include such titles as Phantom, Vertigo, Corona, and Bliss. For this issue of SoundBytes Magazine I thought we could take a look at the powerful Discovery Pro synth plugin. It's a 128-voice virtual analog synth with sample playback capabilities, four layers, twelve oscillators, twelve filters types, re-synthesis, effects, arpeggiator, multiple display sizes, and 2x over/undersampling. The synth plugin is influenced by the Clavia Nord Lead, and can import and export Nord Lead 2 SysEx data.

To install on a PC or Mac you'll need at least a Core 2 Duo CPU. It works with XP (or higher OS) on the PC and OS X 10.6 (or higher) on the Mac. It is available in VST, VST 3 and AU formats. There also is a Linux version. Installation was easy, and soon afterward I had it running within my DAW. Since the display can be resized to larger formats, I opted to use the 1.5x setting. To get to those settings, you just click the Edit button on the left side. That menu is also where you'd go to change the number of voices, configure key splits, import/export patches and banks, and much more. Another way to get to that same menu is with a right-click of the mouse on nearly any blank spot in the display (i.e. in-between the knobs). Towards the bottom of the display is the browser, where you can switch between the large amount of banks and the presets within them.

Oscillators and Filters

Towards the middle of the display are the two main oscillators, and in the lower-right is the Wave oscillator. For the first oscillator, you have choices of sine, triangle, saw, parabolic, PWM, and square waveforms. You can select each with a click next to the waveform, or use the button below the waveforms to cycle through them. For oscillator two, you can select from triangle, saw, parabolic, PWM, white or pink noise, and square waveforms. FM is available here as well, so you can modulate the first oscillator using the second oscillator's frequency. The second oscillator has coarse (+/- 60 semitones) and fine tuning. Clicking the + and – symbols on either side of the tuning control will increase or decrease by an octave at a time. The Pulse control adjusts the PWM waveform type, and the two oscillators can also be synced.

One interesting added feature is enabled when you use the noise waveform and have Sync enabled: The coarse tuning will then function as a control to select between eight varied digital noise shapes. When Sync isn't enabled, the coarse tuning acts as a low pass filter for the white and pink noise waveform selections. Enabling the Ring modulation will multiply the second oscillator's output using the first oscillator's output, and the FM control will let you adjust the semitone tuning for the first oscillator. Last but not least, Keytracking can enabled/disabled for the second oscillator, and there's a mix control for the output of the two oscillators.

The Wave oscillator is in the lower right, tucked away from the two mains oscs. With the Wave osc, you can load any of the included WAV files, or use your own. The WAV files you use need to be zipped to make a bank the synth can recognize, or you can use the SF2 format. A nice added feature is the Pad button which will automatically loop the sound you've selected. Semitone and fine tuning are also here, and keytracking can be enabled/disabled. The AKWF waveforms (a huge selection of single-cycle waveforms) and five other banks of sounds are available here. Any sounds you might add will be under the User bank category. If you just want to use the Wave oscillator, you can disable the two mains oscillators by clicking the blue button at the top-left of their osc controls.

At the top-right of each Zone (oscillator, filter, amplitude sections, etc.) is a menu which lets you select from various Zone presets and you can save your own. Why re-invent the wheel if you have a good setting in the oscillator section? Just click the menu and save it as a preset. For example, one way you might want to use it is for a brass type of sound. It's quick and easy to load in a good sound to start from, and then get on with the rest of the preset design.

Now we'll check out the Filter section. It has an ADSR envelope, and standard cutoff and resonance controls. There are several filter types to choose from, including LowPass 12dB/octave and 24dB/octave, HighPass 12dB/octave and 24dB/octave, BandPass 24dB/octave, BandReject 24dB/octave, Formant (uses 2 parallel bandpass filters) and an eight-taps Phaser type. There are four others (X12, X24, Y12 and Y24) which are modeled after the Moog filter. When Swap (under the Edit menu) is used for the filters, the LowPass 12, LowPass 24, HighPass 24, BandPass 24, BandReject 24 and HighPass 12 use the newer R6 Nord Lead modeled Zero Delay Feedback filter type. The filter envelope amount can be set to respond to velocity by enabling the Velocity button. Keytracking can adjusted using the 1/2 and 2/3 buttons, or a third setting which is Full tracking (both 1/2 and 2/3 selected). The 1/2 setting has just a slight amount of tracking control, and 2/3 means it will have more of an effect on the filter tracking across the keyboard. The Full setting will have an even stronger influence upon the keytracking. To the right of the keytracking is the Distortion. It features three different settings to add some grit and dirt to the sound. I usually ended up using the ASM (Asymmetric Distortion) setting most of the time. The other two settings were decent enough, but I especially liked the ASM setting with some resonance turned up a good amount. My small suggestion for this part of the synth: it would be nice to have a control to adjust the amount of distortion that's being added.

LFOs, Modulation and Arpeggiator

In the Modulation section there are two LFOs, a Graphic Envelope Generator, and a Modulation envelope. The LFOs have five waveforms to select from, and there are Rate and Amount controls. They LFOs can be synced to the host, and cycling through the waveform choices a second time will set them to re-trigger with each new note that's played. A red LED will be displayed when it's set that way. There are a few targets available for modulation with the LFOs: FM amount, Cutoff for the filter, the pitch for both oscillators, pitch of oscillator 2, and the pulse width.

The second LFO can only use a sine wave. Onlyoffice 4 0 – documents spreadsheets and presentations editor. Targets for this LFO include the pitch of the two oscillators, amplitude, and the filter cutoff. Like the first LFO, this one also has Rate and Amount settings. If you switch over to the Arp mode, then you have five play modes to choose from. The Rate and Range (up to five octaves) can also be set from here. The speed of both LFOs easily can get into the audio rate range. One feature I'd like added here is a Fade-in feature that would enable you to fade in the amount of the LFO.

The Modulation envelope can affect a few different targets as well, and includes Attack and Decay controls. Layers, Morphing, Unison, and Effects


The Layers feature in Discovery Pro allows you to load up to four presets at the same time. Since it has a total voice count of up to 128 voices, if you use all four layers and play just one note, that will (of course) use four voices at one time. The layers can be disabled by clicking on the blue light when not needed, and you're able to copy and paste between the layers. A split can be set (under the Edit menu) so layers A/B will be in the lower half of the keyboard, and C/D will be in the upper half.

If you use the Custom setting, you can determine the range of keys for each layer by clicking the down-arrow on the left side. They've also added a way to use a configuration file you can edit to apply settings across all layers very quickly. Download final cut pro 10 4 7.

One very cool feature is that the settings for the plugin's controls can be morphed from one state to another. Once assigned in this way, you can use the modulation wheel to morph between the two settings you've configured, or use a velocity amount to affect the morphing. Using the Morph/Assign button you can switch back and forth between the two morph states you've configured.

Unison can be enabled with the press of a button in the layers section. It gives you a quick way to add a four-voice unison in Mono mode, and a two-voice in Poly mode. It is modeled after the unison from the Nord Lead 2. In Discovery Pro, there are no controls to adjust the detune amount or spread.

Discovery Pro includes three main effects; Phaser, Chorus and Delay. It also has a panning effect and a Gate. The Chorus and Phaser can be switched on or off, but there are no controls on board to tweak their settings. By comparison, the Delay has several controls you can use, such as left/right delay times and feedback amounts, and a left-to-right/ping-pong feature can be enabled. The Panning effect is easy to use and has controls for the position, rate, and amount. The Gate is a simple effect which lets you add bars along a short timeline that will result in a choppy pattern in the resulting audio. The pattern can be copied and pasted between layers, and there's a Mix control to dial in the amount. There is also a Graphic Envelope Modulation feature. It is similar to how you add steps to the Gate, but you can also add the amount by dragging up and down when you add each step of the envelope. Then you can assign it one of four targets and dial in the amount you'd like. The modulation destinations include Osc2, FM, Pulse width, and Filter cutoff.

Conclusion

There is no simple MIDI learn for now, but hopefully it will be added in a future release. However, there is a MIDI CC table within the Edit menu under Help. I'd like the effects added as targets for modulation, and if possible, I'd like a reverb added to the effects lineup. The last minor request I'd like to see added would be a way to mark a preset as a 'Favorite' in the browser.

I don't have a Nord Lead from which to compare this virtual instrument, but I think it sounds great and is easy to use. Some synth plugins are so complex that they can sometimes leave you in a daze with a steep learning curve. That's not the case with Discovery Pro. It has a good balance of features and power to get you where you want to go, and there are over 5,000 presets to get you started.

During the time I was writing this review, Discovery Pro was on sale for 33% off. Normally it is $149 USD but at the moment it's priced at $104. Since R6.4 a Nord Lead 2 modeled unison is now introduced after more than a year on the making. We have carefully measured Polyphonic and Legato/Mono to bring a sound as perfect as possible based on the original hardware.

On Release 6.3 we have rewritten Discovery Pro graphics engine and is now configurable in three window sizes: 1x (400p), 1.5x (600p) and 2x (800p).
